My counselling approach is client led and flexible to best support you and your individual counselling goals. However, in case it helps to demystify the counselling process, here is a typical framework that we can adapt for our work together.
Initial Free Consultation
(15 minutes)
Because the counselling relationship is foundational to our work together, I offer a free fifteen minute consultation so that we can determine the client counsellor fit. After you reach out to me, I will arrange a time to have a brief phone call with you.
First Counselling Intake Appointment
(50 minutes)
Our first full session together is an intake counselling appointment. The focus of the counselling intake includes understanding your presenting concern and counselling goals, identifying your strengths and resources, and reflecting on your background and significant relationships. I approach intake sessions with gentle curiosity and compassion as I begin to understand your story and we collaboratively set goals together.
Working Collaboratively on Initial Counselling Goals:
10-20 Weekly or Bi-weekly Counselling Sessions (50 minutes each)
At the beginning of our work together I typically recommend scheduling between 10-20 sessions, once every week or every other week. This is considered the working stage of counselling where we will meet regularly to build momentum and support you with your counselling goals. The working stage of counselling is collaborative and relational in nature and also requires dedication between appointments to begin practicing new skills and coping strategies, and investing time in reflective practices (e.g., journaling) before our next counselling appointment. Some of my clients have found it beneficial to bring a pen and paper or small journal to our sessions to jot down insights they want to hold onto during the week.
Reflecting on Counselling Goals and Deciding What is Next:
Continued Counselling Sessions as Needed with Gradually Reduced Frequency (50 minutes each)
Following the working stage of counselling we will reflect on your counselling goals and the progress you are making towards them. At this stage in counselling some clients choose to continue with reduced frequency, booking counselling every three weeks or once per month. You always get to determine what is best for you and how regularly you would like to schedule counselling sessions, if at all.
